Game Que
Midnight Club 3 - Dub Edition [PS2]
Right so I am a bit of a connoisseur of car racing games, I brought my PS1 to play Grand tourism 1 and 2, and never ever brought another game for it. Ok, so partly that's because it wasn't long after that I got the PS2.
Any way, if asked I'd say I play racing games more then any thing else, so a new one was some thing to look forward to indeed.
When Midnight Club 3 arrived, I put some serious effort in to it. I've completed about 50% of the game, and I still play it most nights when I get home.
The cars are fairly customisable, all your normal engine upgrades, suspension and alike. Along with some interesting paint work, pearlescent and colour shift paint. Though its quite tricky to make the colour shift look nice on a custom colour setting. But the cars can look nice, though as I race from the bumper view it really isn't a big part of the game.
One thing I did like, in addition to the cars are some bikes. The choppers are fun, but for some serious height speed cornering nothing beats the sports bikes. Though I did find that after riding a bike for a bit I kept trying to turn cars by shifting my weight resulting in some alarming 2 wheel action :-)
As to the cars, I have an Eclipse, Elise, and some kind of Lexus. I start with the Eclipse, a good basic car, with level 2 upgrades its fast, and still slides around corners.
The Elise is in a different class of car, its a bit faster of the line, and 4 wheel drift is just the way you drive it. Quite literally, fling it around corners.
As to the Lexus, well, in its class its quite good, an easy drive but its a luxury saloon, so not really much fun.
Ok, so it goes with out reason to say I liked this game, its excellent to drive, even the women likes it though she lakes the dedication to the course. The only think I have against it is the "Tournaments", I wouldn't mind but they are the only time you can't just drive where ever you want. They are "track" events against the clock, full of hairy right angle turns, I've managed to win one race, not even a tournament, just a race.
Which does remind me of some thing I didn't mention. The races are open track, in that you can miss the corners, or take a different rout. Its hard at first, especially the races with just one check point, finding the fastest way to the end can take some time. Other then that its a nice feature, annoying at times but there are all kinds of short cuts through shopping malls etc.
I think rock star have done a very good job on the game, all they need to do now is a cross between the Sims online and Grand Theft Auto :-) hint hint :-P
Tekken 5 [PS2]
Being a bit of a fan of the old beat em ups, I thought I'd give Tekken 5 a go, after all its the dady of all beat em ups.
It arrived yesterday, and to be honest I played it for 5 mins and sent it back. What a total load of hourse droppings that was. The analog control stick dosn't work, so your forced to use the directional arrows.
Worse, the charactors are slow, and the responce time seem to lagg. In general I really didn't like playing it. Not because it was hard, its just rubbish.
I've played a lot of Soul Calibar 2, and that totaly wipped Tekken 5. How could it go so badly wrong? When I saw it reviewed they said it was good, but frankly I think they would have said that no matter what.
All I can really say about it is, don't bother. Its naff, and not worth the time. I wouldn't even bother to give it one star, and I definatly wont be bother to play it again.
Gods of War [PS2]
I have had Gods of War for a couple of days now, after some PS2 Problems I got to have a go, and I am impressed. I haven't played it loads yet, but its fun.
The game isn't hard to play, basic button bashing will get you by to start off with, and mince up them nastiest. The weapons are interesting and the flow is good.
I tried it out on the harder skill level and I'm doing ok. Been killed a couple of times but then its just back to the last check point. No problem.
After a while you get some more moves, rather then being able to just slash at people whole climbing up, you can drag them off the rope ladder for example.
Still, I've only had a quick go so it’s a bit early to tell never the less, a good first impression.
Destroy All Humans
When Destroy All Humans dropped on the door mat Saturday morning I popped in the PS2 with in seconds. I've been looking forward to this one arriving.
So, first off the advert makes it look good, and I wasn't disappointed. Good cow and farmer killing action, followed by some building and car trashing. Then the game gets really started.
Ok, so it's cheesy, and the story line isn't all that hot. But who cares? its a game and its all just meant to be funny, and it is. Maybe its the voice of Invader Zim that does it, but I just couldn't help but laugh.
Once you get in to it, and get some funky new weapons its a huge amount of fun.
You can trash just about every thing, cars, buildings, Even the white house.
What more could you want?
